The Hierarchy of Hell

According to Revelation 12, the rebel host numbered one third of the angels in Heaven. This third has been numbered as few as 200 apostate angels to as many as 1,333,306,668. Not all those named in medievil sources are ranked in the Hierarchy described in the Keys of Enoch.

There is substantial contradiction in the categorizing and classification of angels, whether Fallen or Upright. The categorized powers of many Fallen angels are based on medievil demonology texts, most of which concern the summoning of Fallen angels in order to locate buried treasure. Some seem to serve both Heaven and Hell. Others share names and authorities. This writer can only assume that this represents the basic incomprehensible nature of the Divine. Also, this text is based on the dogmatic Christian belief in angelic amd human rebellion against God, Sin, Good and Evil, the existance of Hell, and conflict between Fallen and Upright angels for the fate of the world and mankind.

Demons as described in the publications of White Wolf's World of Darkness seem to be drawn primarily from the Kabbalist and other demonological texts originating in the Middle Ages. High levels of skill in Bureaucracy stress a highly organized and structured as envisioned in the Middle Ages. Etiquette would seem to be derived from C.S. Lewis' Screwtape. I take some liberty in referring to “demons” in their Judeo-Christian context of “Fallen Angels”. Elemental demons of inherently evil nature are, to me, missing out on the pathos inherent in a fall from Grace…and that's what the World of Darkness is all about.

From “Highest” to “Lowest”, the Hierarchy of Hell follows that of Heaven: Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominions, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Archangels, and Angels. Angels cited in theological and/or demonological texts, but not “ranked” into one of the above categories are listed separately, along with other beings that are not clearly denoted as Fallen Angels. The final category consists of Fallen Angels from texts from the Middle Ages and later times, along with whatever classification may be assigned to them. These are categorized by feudal title, which does not appear to have any direct relationship to the Hierarchy as listed above.

Seraphim

Satan/Sammael/Iblis
